telenor internet ad is against our social valuesLast week, at one of Telenor’s Karo Mumkin functions, I saw VP of Telenor Pakistan, Amir Ibrahim on TV talking about Telenor’s sincere efforts which they are doing to give a much needed direction to the Pakistani nation. He said, at this crucial moment the nation is looking at us so we could become a role model and guide them. I personally liked this idea very much, execution was marvelous and ending was superb.

On the other hand another frame of mind within Telenor is spoiling the whole image which Karo Mumkin effort was able to build during the entire campaign. If one campaign shows the true social responsibility of the second leading operator in Pakistan and add value to its image, other silly campaigns do the opposite.
Its recent TVC about promoting the use of internet, though in a very pathetic way, go against our culture and social values.

If I ask Mr. Amir Ibrahim to describe this ad on the stage the way he did with Karo Mumkin, I am sure, he will not be able to deliver any positive statement about this ad because this particular TVC does not match his personality and values as well.

What an unethical way to promote the usage of internet by going after the college girls, only agenda is to make them friends, do not care about your teacher or principal. The entire TVC focuses on making a friendship with a college girl who is the daughter of college principal.

In our society, which is unfortunately on the verge of destruction just because of massive media war and lack of education being few of the reasons, does not compel us to go for any such aim in our life. Parents, teachers and women have their own distinct values. It is a fact that we are forgetting our values and that is why we have lost our identity. Globally we are called a terrorist and dishonest nation and this label is consistently pinching us the most. But we have to deal with it.

Since Indian culture has strengthened its roots in Pakistan through their media dominance, we have started to lose whatever we have. Many of our writers and scholars are crying over this. To some extent they are doing their part by awakening this nation and especially the youth. I again appreciate Telenor here for their Karo Mumkin effort, a ray of hope.

But this particular TVC reminds me of any Imran Hashmi’s movies in which he doesn’t bother to make fun of his teachers or the principal of his college and instead keep following the girl even she is the daughter of his principal.

A Djuice ad prior to this one came from the very school of thought, I doubt. In which a father asks his son to answer the door bell, who (Son) is busy watching TV and using Djuice package, replies the father to go for the same. Do we tell our parents or elder ones at home to do the things when they ask us to do the same?
I have seen this attitude in Hollywood movies when teenagers dump their parents for nothing. If it is becoming a practice in Pakistan, should we promote it?

Not long ago, another Djuice TVC, in which a young guy who is apparently losing his day just because he did not sleep last night because he was texting and calling his friends, doesn’t sound good either. The TVC suggests that this boy has lost his senses and become a maniac because of SMS bundle package which means he has nothing else to do at nights but just texting and calling. He is so mentally sick that he keeps on talking to his “Jigars” while he is asleep.

What kind of nation are we building???

Is it the only way to sell the connections and promote the usage of mobile phone and internet by de-tracking our youth?

It’s a proven fact that people follow what they see and hear on media. We have more than 60% of youth in our population who we trust and expect to change the destiny of this country. If these people are misguided what kind of future we hold.

If we are inspired by Indian way of life, can’t we compete with them in creation? How many typical lardka-lardki ads they produce, particularly in the Telecom sector?

Today India is threatening the entire IT industry of the world by making a $35 computer tablet with is equipped with a touch screen. Interestingly this computer tablet is a creation of their university students who are being supported by Government and private entities to make it a success. Just recently Indian government has also announced to rent out the PC for Rs. 15 per day in the remote areas of the country just to remove the hindrances of affordability in the way of mass IT education.

Is this the only way to promote internet in Pakistan. Those countries which are using high speed internet on their move, do they keep following the opposite gender the entire day. Can’t we just promote education, health, culture and social responsibility through internet?

How can a boy or a girl who doesn’t sleep at night because of night package, does not respect his parents and doesn’t study at college because he/she is busy with other day packages, prosper in the real life. How successful KARO MUMKIN would then be?

Telenor is currently highlighting a very little percentage of de-tracked people who have no goals in their lives but just to keep texting and calling.
Did Telenor think for once what all the Faizas in Pakistan will face after this ad and how many Macho Talhas will this ad produce?

UPDATED (22-Sept-2010, 5:10 PM): We just received an official statement from Telenor which is mentioned below;

We would like to express our regret if we have unintentionally hurt anyone’s sentiments through this advertisement. The said advertisement is already off air and will not be telecast again.”… complete statement on the following link

    Imitating the kafir
Even if the kafir has a better way, a Muslim should not imitate it.
e4.1 It is kufr (unbelief) to turn from the Sunna to imitate the kafir, when one believes that the kafir way is superior to the Sunna.

I would like to bring some sense to the mobile companies who are hell bent upon intruding our leisure times that we pay for, with stupid and nonsense ads which have no connection at all with our culture or society…… They leech us with so many taxes and waste our hard earned money on these silly ads instead of improving their service. ……Please does anyone know how much do we actually get out of the 100 rs card that we load. …can we afford such expensive ads that are full of rubbish…….

I always believe in “do good have good”. Actually its our behaviour as a nation which makes these people think that we’ve forgotten what we were and what we are! We have to change our selves from inside and outside so that no one can say or feel that we are not PAKISTANIS with a strong social, moral and cultural background!

  6. Akhlaq on September 23, 2010 at 6:35 pm

not only telenor….. we have been supporting all such ads whether these are of ufone, jazz, warid, scom, zong or else…… why blaming telenor only…. its our own weakness that such ads have become popular in pakistan

wt is our youth doing we all know very well, in Indian drama i feel they teach us how to make relation with other people if u r married. And how much this relation r important for you. i personally now one lady she left her husband and her children when people find out the inner story then they realize it’s due to Star Plus. And if we want to take action then we need to start from the top, and stop all those control media channel and add which are against reflection of our society.i appreciate work of apnatime and i also want to baned on those sort of add. Telenor Pakistan should act responsibly? Yes.

But if we want a foreign company to act decently then We must also clean up our act and stop being the ‘acha bachas’ we think, ,nay, Pretend we all are.

We are bunch of hypocrites who can not look the mirror in the eye. We cant stand to see to different facets of the society we live in.

Stop living in a moral fantasy world, it will do us all good, the world is not black and white.

  15. uzge on September 22, 2010 at 4:24 pm

  16. Shah on September 22, 2010 at 4:16 pm

God Help you guys for discussing this little thing where you can really make some difference by discussing something big.

    Directionless People..

    • Sehar on September 22, 2010 at 4:53 pm

small things always make the big difference. sir.. this is about our selves. we have always avoided these little things and now you see where we are standing now after thing long journey of over 60 years. bigger thing??? what would that be if we are not even strong with our smaller things.

      • Shah on September 23, 2010 at 3:39 pm

Have you ever heard of French or Iranian resolution?? Read history and know what i mean by bigger things.. If you still want discussion, feel free to write a blog here

        • Mudassar J Mufti on September 23, 2010 at 4:06 pm

I don’t deny about the bigger things. But it doesn’t mean we leave aside the smaller issues which when piled up become something big.
Just like our religion Islam, which is also a religion of daily life, very small things that we do in our lives, are all explained Islam. Islam doesn’t mean that something big, some bigger war with anti-muslims etc etc. It took our Prophet Muhammad SAW and his companions more than a decade to establish a rule again in Makkah. They started with a bigger claim of God but made it possible by changing very small things in lives of his companions, that turned out to be a bigger thing when he came back to Macca with all the strength.
By the way how many years Khumaini remained out of his country and the came back with a mighty force. He could have done a bigger thing from the day one by kicking out the Shah of Iran.

      • uzge on September 24, 2010 at 7:34 am

what r the big problems of pakistan?the flood? well we took care of that and donated when it could have been stopped because the government was informed before hand in the beginning of this year.when they ignore that little thing,it bacame a big problem.and youth is the future of pakistan and the bigger picture is that if v prtray that this is r youth then where can v get with it:?

You are criticizing Djuice ads.Whereas you yourself is giving Djuice ad at the top of your website.

  23. ahsan on September 21, 2010 at 2:50 pm

You have to understand the message of above mentioned TVC, Plz give me answar of following Q
    1. Brief me about the culture of our colleges?
    2. Can you see the road where young girls talk, is she talking with family or ?
    3. What is the way to introduce cellular services kindly guid the industry?
    4. If it is bad why are you giving the permission your child to use Mobile?
    5. Now a days its our part of life style is it tru or not?
    6. if you wanna control this type of activites kindly write a story how can we control

    MAY BE I AM WRONG

    • Mudassar J Mufti on September 22, 2010 at 12:30 pm

      1. Which colleges you are talking about? We have every kind of college in Pakistan where students are engaged in ethical and unethical activities as well and to be honest, anti-society and anti cultural activities and thoughts are spreading like fire. But do you believe anyone should exploit the situation to achieve a personal goal. Don’t you think we should bring this whole scenario to normal, to a level of decency and discourage anyone who misuses it? Will you (we) appreciate, allow our sisters and daughters to have a relation with guys in their colleges when we know this friendship/relation doesn’t have to do anything with their education etc..
      2. Again, girls on road talk on mobilephone. Yes, we can’t say who they are talking to. On the very same roads, we see prostitutes doing their business. Earlier people used to avoid them and now I see cars and motorcycles stopping by. That means couple of us have started to accept this thing. Should we further promote it? Will you allow your son or anyone you love to indulge in any such thing?
      3. There are many ways to introduce and promote technology. Can you check out this ad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwB3G6aEhFk
      4. World has already tried to launch special mobilephones for children. But it’s a psyche of a child to go for the things which you would not give him/her. But that doesn’t mean you give them everything they demand. You have child lock in TVs, Cars and other accessories for this. Many children use the slang language as part of routine life because they see their elders using the same in routine or they follow the atmosphere. Should we close our eyes and let them do the same? We can’t.
      5. Yes I will write another story on it shortly.

      • sehrish Khan on September 22, 2010 at 3:07 pm

Absolutely appreciated … great work done by you Mr. Mudassar

I appreciate what the apnatime has discussed in this blog. I believe that we should care for our culture and values.

  25. Shahzad Hussain on September 21, 2010 at 12:46 pm

In another TVC about Telenor Internet service. Young fellows are shown annoyed by the library environment and they (seems like) looking for an escape from library. Weather its in the form of SMS or free internet that makes them free from such a slow moving environment of books all around.

I feel so shameful by that ad because its the books that made the nations and we as a nation are no where in the knowledge race. Our young generation is looking other means to get knowledge but don’t like books. Checkout the neighboring nations Books publishing and reading is one of the biggest hobby of people India and China but in Pakistan we really hate to go to library and this kind of ads… They are last nail in the coffin.

I think Telenor should encourage book reading rather making it a thing to hate.

  26. Amer Awan on September 21, 2010 at 11:45 am

    so true,
it seems that telenor is only focused on providing dating facility to the youths. All the ads focuses on getting the girl. It becomes embarrassing to watch this ad with your family, especially when you are watching TV with your elders. It thing like this make people to react with extreme. They should realize and care about our culture values. Maybe next time they should make ads with drug addicts where telenor is providing services to them to get high. or may be robbers or thieves are getting special package from telenor, or any other mobile network for that matter, to arrange facilitate their activities. They should respect our culture and values, there is a limit to everything, as saying goes ” when in Rome do as Roman do” they will act upon this in other country but in Pakistan they wanted to be progressive and so many other fancy words they can use to justify their acts.
Thanks for bringing this to their notice.

  27. Max Lee on September 21, 2010 at 11:17 am

An absurd and immoral effort of Telenor Pakistan

  28. lubna on September 20, 2010 at 11:41 pm

I think Telenor has lost its mind since it commercial making team was changed in the past. They see us the same way they see other European countries

  29. Atiqur Rehman on September 20, 2010 at 6:40 pm

I think this is the right time to safeguard a lot of things. Including our values, our image, our culture or overall Pakistan. I would not call it a conspiracy, I would call it, lack of training or knowledge about Pakistan. We really have forgotten all the basis on which this country was made.

I am sure that the person who conceives and approves these ideas, has been living abroad and is a so called B R O A D minded. Who considers all the criticism as Mullah approach.

I congratulate Muddassar and team, that you brought these things up. Keep it up. And try stop things which effect our generations badly.

But, it is better that instead of just debating on the problem, we should come up with solution. Why not open up this discussion, on giving better ideas to Telenor, which are far reaching, profitable and making all the Pakistani sense?

    Best of luck…

    Apnatime has done good job.

  31. assaad on September 20, 2010 at 5:38 pm

No … I think this is reaction of economic crisis, all big companies especially telecom companies could not meet there expenses because of competition with each others. thats why they designed there advertisements to attract users but that is not truth what they show in their ads and in this race they forget the social ethics. unfortunately they are changing minds of society in bad manners… i wish they should understand what they are doing ..

  32. Zeeshan Ahmed on September 20, 2010 at 5:32 pm

STOP , STOP DONT MAKE ANY PICTURE. These was the comments given by one of the Engineer to the training coordinator , while I was giving Training to one of the Cellular operator in Libya. He give this comments because some females were also attending that training. We have a rich cultural heritage which not only shows our independent identity but also bounded with our Religion. If Telenor is a multinational who dont care about nation’s ethics and religion at least, the advertisement agencies should show sense of responsibility. Money making should not be the only agenda , nations building should have priority.

About 5 years back TELEFUN advertise its campaign through Imtiab Bachan posters. Such kind of things which are against nation’s ideology and ethics should be stopped and specially Telenor must learn lessen from past years when thousands of Telenor Sims were burnt. I wish Telenor being a major player of Telecom industry in Pakistan will take care next time.

I would like to congrats APNA TIME team on raising very important issue.

    Thanks
    Zeeshan Ahmed

It is conspiracy to destroy the Pakistani nation.

    • Anonymous on September 22, 2010 at 10:23 pm

I dun understand y Pakistani start blaming others for wats happenin in their country….that means others are blamed for wat ever is happenin within ur family!!! Stop blaming others n try to improve yourself ….this ad is made in Pakistan by some Pakistani Advertising Agency so how can u blame others for all this…its just that we Pakistani love adopting bad things n ignoring good things!!!

  34. zeeshan on September 20, 2010 at 4:59 pm

@Noman, i think they are following a typical Indian agenda…

  35. Noman ul Haq on September 20, 2010 at 4:52 pm

Even if we are talking about Karo Mumkin Show there is also a nagitive approach taken by making a Pro Indian Lawyer Ansar Burni as judge.
