Since the start of their protest, a month ago, PTCL’s employees were demanding 50% increase in their salaries whereas the higher management had agreed to increase the salaries by 30% and further 20% increase in the salaries was announced on the performance basis but this was not acceptable to the employees who have been agitating in front of PTCL head quarter in Islamabad for almost a month.

A source close to the matter revealed that the agreement between PTCL management and Union of employees may reach today where-by both the parties will agree to increase the salaries by 40% and a further 10% will be increased in the month of December.

On Sunday, PTCL management asked the employees to resume their offices and it was further announced that salaries and bonuses of all employees who resume their duties on Monday (Today) will be released immediately and no disciplinary action will be taken against them. PTCL had already withheld the bonuses and salaries of protesting employees.

Till today, more than 40% of the PTCL’s network is running inefficiently because the ground staffs, linemen and other employees have stopped working on customer’s complaints due to the month long strike and agitation activity in Islamabad. Apart from the home customer, corporate services including banks, stock exchange, data companies etc are facing the music.

LinkdotNet, a subsidiary of Orascom that relies on PTCL for its DSL connections, has more than 600 connections out of order only in Lahore city. Their customer services staff is continuously conveying this message to its customers that due to the strike at PTCL, DSL services cannot be restored. LinkdotNet is facing problems with more than 3000 connection country wide. Other companies are facing the same fate.

Last Friday, the protest turned ugly when dozens of protestors clashed with police official trying to disperse them. More than 35 employees were arrested on that day. On Saturday, another 12 protestors were arrested in front of Islamabad Press Club when they were gathering to protest against the arrest of their colleagues.
