Universal Service Fund logoOn this 63rd Independence Day I take great pride in stating that, Universal Service Fund (Ministry of IT) continues to provide ICT services to more and more unserved areas of Pakistan.

In three years USF has provided basic telephony services in 3,500 unserved villages and work is in progress for another 2,700. Similarly in the ‘Optic Fiber to Every Tehsil’ programme, 5,300 kms of optic fiber is being laid in Sindh and Balochistan to connect unserved Tehsils with information highways. In yet another Programme, nearly 200 of 2nd and 3rd tier cities and towns of the country have been provided Broadband Internet and up till now nearly 140,000 connections have been provided out there.

Target is to reach all such towns and cities that are approximately 450 in numbers. Recently a project to set-up Benazir Multi-purpose Community Telecentres has been initiated which aims at introducing and promoting e-services in villages through Broadband as availability of PCs and computer literacy are the main issues there.

At USF we strongly believe that future of the country lies with Information Communication Technology (ICT). It is only ICT that can take healthcare, education, job opportunities, governance etc, to the doorsteps of our population, especially the 60% living in rural areas and another 20% living in small towns and cities.

With profound dedication, let us all work to put in our best efforts to assist our country in achieving technological prosperity, especially in those areas of the country that are so far unserved.
