QMobile E950 reviewQMobile E950 is a low end mobile with some amazing high end technologies which makes it a treat for its user. QMobile E950 boasts a touch screen, Wi-Fi, Dual SIM and a decent design and supports two active SIMs at once. It is an affordable device with attractive features which youngsters would love to have in their pockets. QMobile E950 is the cheapest branded Wi-Fi mobile on the market with a price tag of only Rs. 6,999 and the number of features packed in it makes it a great bargain, so let’s get on with the review of this little monster.

Unboxing

QMobile E950 has a compact box in which the accessories and other goodies are packed nicely. Here are its contents:

  1. CD.
  2. User guide.
  3. Cable.
  4. Charger.
  5. Hands free.
  6. QMobile E950 Handset.

 Build & Design

The QMobile E950 features a resistive 3.2” TFT QVGA (320*400) touch screen, A QMobile Logo sits nicely below the screen. There is a big round key located just below the screen which works well as a track pad and can be pressed to return to home as well. On bottom of the front screen there is an ear piece and pinhole equipped with the mic.

There are no keys and controls on the left side of the phone and it has a shiny finish which will easily catch your finger prints, same goes with the right side. The grip should have been less slippery as it is hard to stop the device slipping from your finger at times. At the bottom of the phone there is a 3.5 mm jack for plugging in your hands free and a micro USB connector which can be used for transferring your data and charging as well.

On the top is a solitary power button which is used for locking/ unlocking and turning the phone on/ off. There is a slit for inserting straps on the other end.

A 3.2 megapixel camera is present on an oval like platform at the rear and there are small holes of speaker which are just beside the camera. Another QMobile Logo is printed on the centre bottom of the backside. Back cover can be removed with much ease, unlike other models of QMobiles and even Samsung, Megagate and HTC. Bravo for E950!! Under the back cover you will find the battery which can be removed to see slots for two SIM cards and memory card. E950’s memory can be extended up to 16 GB by using a compatible memory card.

User Interface

It is quite understandable that E950 has been targeted for the people transiting from manual keyboard to touch screen phones as the User Interface of QMobile E950 is intuitive and can be easily grasped even by those who have never used a touch phone before. There is a hint of TouchWiz UI when using the device for the first time, but there are a lot of differences so calling it a counterfeit would be harsh.

There are 4 shortcuts at the bottom of the screen i.e. call, contacts, messages and menu. The main menu can easily be accessed from the bottom shortcuts or by pressing the track pad located just below the screen. There is a slide menu for shortcuts to various applications which can be dragged and dropped on the main screen.  These shortcuts can be selected by a long tap and moved around the screen, you can always drag them back into the slide menu if they are no longer needed to be accessed readily.

The home screen wallpapers are easy to change and we loved changing them by swiping sideways on the home screen. Swiping sideways on the track pad when you are on the home screen also changes the wallpapers. We would have liked it even more if instead of changing wallpapers there were at least three screens to put out favorite shortcuts.

Navigating through track pad is quite easy and convenient. The response and performance of the touch screen is quite impressive if we look at the price of the phone but you will take some time to get used to it as it takes a harder tap than other resistive screens we have used.

The menu has been divided in three screens by default where different applications are displayed. For using internet there is a built-in Opera Mini web browser which performs well as expected. This device comes preinstalled with a lot of internet dependent apps such as Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk, Google Search, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and even Google Maps. Having all these applications on board makes it a fully equipped device to be used for hours and hours. These applications will keep you connected with your friends and family using your QMobile E950.

Connectivity

What connectivity options do we expect in a high end smartphone? Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G and a microUSB is the answer. Consider 3G is a non-decisive factor as this technology is still absent in Pakistan, the other three are present in E950 which makes it a complete phone as far as connectivity is concerned.

If you want to transfer your files from your desktop to your QMobile E950 then data cable comes into play. When plugged in, it shows three options and you can decide whether to transfer data or use it with the PC Suite which comes in the installation CD provided in the box. If you are having trouble with the USB drivers or you have lost the CD, you can download both PC Suite and USB drivers from official page of QMobile E950 http://www.qmobile.com.pk/13/E950.html.

We were impressed with the availability of detailed Wi-Fi settings in the phone and instant connectivity allowed by the phone software. If some how you can’t get your head around the settings, you can find these by visiting QMobile website.

The call quality is quite amazing on this device. You can easily browse through your contact list and make calls using the on screen touch buttons. The phone allows two active SIMs at a time, however when a SIM is on a call, the other SIM returns “out of reach” message when called.

Multimedia

QMobile E950 has a 3.2 megapixel camera at the back which gives good image quality. Conditions with lesser light have a great effect on the camera. The snaps taken can easily be transferred to desktop or can be sent as an MMS or transferred through Bluetooth.  The camera can be used as a webcam when connected with the PC.

The image viewer is good, but there is no option (or we were dumb enough to not find any) to share an image right from the image viewer. We are including some snaps taken by E950’s camera to give you an idea about the image quality.

We listened to some songs on our E950 but we think that there can be improvements in the speaker area; however listening to songs with the handsfree makes a positive difference.

QMobile E950 has a standard battery of 1000mAH which we think may be improved considering the 3.2” screen and energy hungry apps and features present on the device. The file manager on the phone is simple but it still does the job well.

PROS

  • 3.2” QVGA touch screen
  • Good build quality
  • Intuitive UI
  • Wi-Fi
  • Preloaded internet apps including Twitter, Facebook etc.
  • 3.5 mm jack
  • Optical Track pad
  • Bluetooth
  • Camera works as a webcam
  • Support JAVA apps

CONS

  • Body is prone to finger prints
  • Only one home screen
  • No camera flash

Conclusion

QMobile E950 should be the phone of your choice if you are looking for a Wi-Fi enabled touch phone and are short on budget. The fact that it supports two SIMs is another plus as we usually don’t find a lot of smartphones with dual SIM functionality.

    QMobile E990 Review:

QMobile is a new company having no experience about mobiles. I’v purchased QMobile E990 and mostly I found this mobile embarrassing & Absolutely Non user friendly. Some of basic features about Mobiles are:

    Good Features:
1 – No doubt it has an Elegant Design & Good Looking mobile.
2 – Excelent option for re-arrangement of Icons on main screen.
3 – Good Scrolling of Screen & Files.
    4 – Excelent Scroll Types & Features.
5 – Excelent feature of Picture Enlarger.
6 – 2 Sims activated at the same time is a good feature.
    7 – Battery Timing is also v.good.
8 – Internet Features are v.good e.g Messengers, Browsers, youtube, Tweeter etc.
    9 – Sound Quality is V.Good with Equilizer & 3D Effects.
10- I Vote 8/10 for its Design, 5/10 for its Features & 3/10 for its (User friendly) Performance.

    Bad Features:
1 – We cannot control the Volume of Audio file When played directly from file (Without adding into Play List). Up & Down buttons must be installed on the side of Mobile to control the volume of directly opened Media file.
2 – No thumbnail of pictures shown in the Image List so we have to open lot of image files file (To view it) to find out our concerned image.
3 – When we open an Image It takes 3-5Sec to adjust the pixels of image then image becomes cleared.
4 – Touch sensitivity is v.good and some time v.embarrassing. There’s no touch sensitivity control option.
5 – When we open any folder, an option screen is shown having 2 options of Open & Format. It’s also more awkward because some times we touch on Format option instead of Open. It’ll further ask Yes or No to proceed format option.
6 – When we open any file, an option screen is shown having many options of Open, Delete, Delete all, Rename etc. It’s also v.Embarrassing because we want to to only open a file. These options must be implanted manually after opening that file. If we want to open options to alter file then OK of not then we can only view that particular file.
7 – During SMS writing Language Change Option is also non technical. When we want to write capital Alphabet, We must touch language change Option many times to Change it to the Capital Letters. Small & Capital Alphabets must be highlighted with single touch. It may be automatic. After dot it must be changed to capital letter. Or atleast capital letter Option or First capital Letter option must come by a single touch after Small alphabet option.
8 – There is Recording option in Mobile but we cannot record the Incoming or Outgoing Calls in easy way. What is the purpose of this recording? Mobile must contain one touch recording system.
9 – There are no themes for the mobile screen. Only Black & White screen is shown all the times. New themes gave fresh look to any mobile. Once a person get bored by using same theme for some period, he can change it to give a new look to his mobile.
10- Wifi is Non stable, Wifi Setting is also very confusing & on multiple sites e.g Separate settings for MSN & Yahoo Messengers, Opera Mini Browsers etc. Most of time we use internet but at the end of our work we came to know that we were connected through one of Simm instead of Wifi. Wifi & GPRS settings must show a dedault option & only on one main screen & every other software must pick default setting from the main setting.
11- There is no Softwares & Themes on internet.
12- The Main defect for internet users is that there is no Downloading or saving option for 3GP movies, MP3 Audio files or Web pages etc. Just play & go ahead.
13- There are also other defects in this mobile. Due to these defects I don’t like it. This mobile can only be liked by such a person who didn’t use other brands previously & it will be his first experience of mobile.

I’m sure that all above said defects are also present in previous models. With these defects a mobile model can be sold by spending a huge on advertisement but it will fail to enjoy the long term repute Like Nokia 3310, 1100, SonyEriccson K700i etc.
These all defects can be subsided if Company give some special features in the same price e.g. High megapixel camera with carlzies lense, High memory, Xenon Flash, LED Torch, PDF Reader etc.
Company’s RnD section must think about these features, otherwise this mobile brand will also lose its repute like Bird Mobile, Sando Mobile, Club Mobile, Tecno Mobile and other chinese Mobiles etc. These all brands enjoy their repute for a very small period of time.
In the last of my review I requested all of you to guide the Consumers to select best product from a market bulk, In this manner not only Consumers will be satisfied and ultimately the Companies will also Improve there products to achieve the beter sale in market.

    Thanks

Mr.Saeed, we appreciate your feedback as you really took out a lot of time to write comments in length. Coming to the “bad features”:
      1. Was noted and conveyed
      2. Same as above
      3. This phenomenon is normal in low-end smartphones
      4. Sensitivity control is not provided in a lot of Android and in any of Windows Phones, so this isnt a standard feature. New users take time to adjust to touch screens
5, 6, 7. This is standard in Touch-Wiz type UIs. The tweaks you are mentioning are not even present in High end phones
      8. It is present for voice recording. It seems you have been using a Series 60 Nokia because that was the last series which allowed call recording. Recording calls without prior permission is illegal and unethical, hence all smartphones (Android, Meego, Apple, Windows Phone) do not allow call recording despite having the hardware to do so
      9. More than two themes are there. Swipe side-ways when you are on home screen
      10. This is pretty standard
      11. The phone supports Java software
      12. This is not a defect. Most smartphones do not allow such downloading
      13. Mention those and we will be happy to answer.

Im extremely sorry to mention the fact that a touchscreen smartphone cannot be compared with Nokia 3310 etc.

As an independent reviewer, having no relation with QMobile whatsoever, I feel that the best set of features in the said price range have been provided by the company keeping in view the constant devaluation of Ruppee. The features you are talking about viz. Carl Zeiss optics and Xenon Flash, if implemented will take the phone to same price range as high-end smartphones i.e above 40k.

Still, we are open to criticism and looking forward to your future comments. I suggest you use an Android and a WP7 device and inquire about their prices before making a comparison.

      Regards
      Bilal Sulehri
