Shahbaz Sharif to distribute 100,000 laptops

100,000 free laptop for students by CM Shahbaz SharifWell, the Government of Punjab has taken a revolutionary step, as it seems in the first look, for celebration of merit in the province because it has announced to give free laptops to 100,000 students who have scored at least 70% marks in their last semesters of MA, MSc, BS Hons or LLB. Besides, the students of PhD, LLM, MS and M.Phil will get the free laptops regardless of their marks, whereas the top 100 students of every Matriculation and Intermediate board will also get the free laptops in prize from the provincial government. The registration of eligible students for this offer will continue till the 31st December, and the eligible students are being informed to register their names through proper channels before the last date for registration expires.

I highly regard this initiative of government but I have serious concerns over it. Actually, the fault in our system, due to which the democracy failed in Pakistan every time in past, was the lack of wisdom in our politicians and civil society. Our leaders promised to bring revolution and introduce reforms every time they stood in elections, but we did not bother to ask them about their roadmaps to fulfill their promises. If we compare ourselves with the public of world’s leading countries, like UK, USA, Germany and France, the people of these countries always ask about the roadmaps whenever their politicians promise to do something after coming in power.

So I am sure that Mian Shahbaz Sharif, whose photo besides his Facebook and Twitter addresses is being published in advertisments of subjected offer, understands the price of 100,000 laptops. The message which is conveyed in the advertisement is directly giving the sense that only Mian Shahbaz Sharif deserves the whole appreciation for this initiative. Currently there are 33000 Facebook fans of Mian Shahbaz Sharif, if only 100,000 more students become his Facebook fan in the hope of getting free laptops, his Facebook fans’ number will increase to at least four times than present. And if the government changes, as the rumors are circulating in Pakistan, then there is no warranty that the laptops will be delivered to the deserving students, because the fulfillment of promise lies in the continuity of the present punjab administration.

Actually, this is the tragedy of Pakistan that our leaders as well as our people always look for the short-cut way to success. We have never thought about building new technologies in Pakistan, we are the maker of nuclear bombs, tanks and missiles, but we have not been able to build the daily life accessories. These good are produced in other countries and we spend our precious foreign currency reserves to get them. I think if Mian Shahbaz Sharif had spent the money to bring the technology of building up new laptops in Pakistan, instead of purchasing 100,000 new laptops from other countries, then the laptops would have been become cheaper enough to be affordable to the public of Pakistan. We must not forget that Bangladesh has started to produce laptops. And if we still insist on to buy these goods from other countries, then we will do injustice with our coming generations because we will keep them back technologically.

    • Hannan Ahmad on December 19, 2011 at 9:49 pm

Because the offer has been launched to celebrate merit, hardly there are chances that the low merit students get laptops. So it depends upon whether your marks come within the criteria set by CM or not. Kindly see the advertisement of this offer to get further help.

sir i am not on the facebook than how can i contact u.plz tell me the official posting addreess if u hav any………..sir why dont u provide online forms/???

    • Hannan Ahmad on December 19, 2011 at 3:08 pm

Miss Sarah, first of all I am thankful for your interest in ApnaTime. Actually, as it seems, the Facebook has become a voice. You may have reservations over my claim but this is really going to become an effective medium in near future. So I suggest you to make an account on Facebook because we have to compete with the world and this will be impossible if we do not adopt to the new technologies.
As far as you said about forms, you do not need forms, you should register your data on the website whose address I have already provided you. Please also note that I am employed at ApnaTime and I am not a representative of government to help you in this subject. So you should consult the CM Punjab at his Facebook and Twitter accounts. Please see the links I have provided in this regard, I am sure your problem will be solved in this way.

  33. salman on December 19, 2011 at 2:24 am

The objective is to provide free laptops to 100 thousand brilliant students currently studying at public sector colleges and universities or are high achievers of the Boards of Punjab in Matriculation Examinations. The motivation and enthusiasm behind this scheme is to help students rise above problems and hurdles they face in their path to gain knowledge and excel professionally.

Nice article . But I want to make some points

I am a computer science student and listed to get free Laptop and very happy to know that as my parents can not afford to buy me a laptop .

2ndldy you mentioned about Bengladesh laptops if you ever cared about looking at them . They are not laptops they are almost childrens toys .

3rd I wonder from where this Punjab govt will bring funds to buy 1 lac Laptops as if 1 Laptop is worth 30 thousand it is going to cost 3 Billion rupees .

    thank you

    • Hannan Ahmad on December 16, 2011 at 2:25 pm

Actually every big tree is a plant in the start, so do you not see that textile was one of the major exports of Pakistan up to a few years ago but with the passage of time, the Pakistani investors are shifting their industries to Bangladesh and Bangladesh is emerging as a leading textile exporter at a time when our exports are declining. In same way if they have started to build laptops, no doubt that their laptops are like toys, but they have at least managed to keep their national currency within their country. My point is that CM Punjab should have followed the Bangladeshi strategy and had taken the decisions accordingly, in order to prove his love for land and education.

Well, a claim without any argument is a blame and the use of non-social words indicates that the person is with no shame, so it is not necessary to engage you in a debate.

As far as my duty is concerned, I am doing my duty and pointing out the weaknesses of our socio-political system.

  47. Hannan Ahmad on December 14, 2011 at 12:29 pm

Respected Abdur Rehman, this is our responsibility to keep an eye on the government strategies. We will criticize every politician whenever he will cross the limit or will use the government resources for his personal benefit. The wrong decision making of CM is at its place, but the fact is that his all schemes have been limited to growing his fame in public, like Sasti Roti Scheme, the recently launched taxi and transport schemes and now the distribution of free laptops.
If this money is properly used for the betterment of students, then of course it will be a good use of money. But at a time when Pakistani youth is at the top in running porn related searches on the search engines, giving free laptops to a number of students without considering whether they need it or not, is an easy way to increase his fame but it is not good for the youth from any side. I am confirm thousands of those students will be those who do not need computer in their studies.

  48. Abdur Rehman on December 13, 2011 at 8:05 pm

Hannan Bhai what you have written in this article is uncompareable mean you have beautifully displayed the original face of Pakistani Politicians. In fact Mian Shahbaz Sharif is going to increase his repo. somehow but I think we all ,The student community is to boycott this advertisement.

    • Hannan Ahmad on December 14, 2011 at 12:54 pm
